AEO, GEO, AIO, SXO: What's Changing in SEO in 2026

SEO isn't dead. It's gotten more complicated. Four new acronyms describe four real shifts in how people search for information online. Knowing them is useful. Understanding what they actually require is necessary.

SEO: The Foundation Remains

53% of web traffic still comes from organic search. Demand for SEO on Google has grown over the past twelve months, not shrunk.

Technical SEO, on-page SEO, building authority through backlinks: these three dimensions haven't been replaced. They're the precondition for everything else to work.

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization

GEO means optimizing content to be cited by generative search engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude.

These systems don't show a list of links. They synthesize an answer. They pick the sources they consider most authoritative. Being that source is the goal of GEO.

What it requires: structured content, verifiable citations, domain authority, semantic markup. A site with weak SEO doesn't become a reliable source for an LLM.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

AEO is about instant answers: featured snippets, knowledge panels, position zero on Google. The user gets the answer directly in the SERP, without clicking.

What it requires: specific questions with direct answers in the content, FAQ structure, structured data. It's not alternative SEO. It's SEO focused on the answer.

AIO — AI Overviews Optimization

Google AI Overviews are the generative summaries that appear at the top of search results. AIO means optimizing to be included in those summaries.

The mechanism is similar to GEO: quality content, clear structure, source authority. The difference is context: Google Search, not a separate chatbot.

SXO — Search Experience Optimization

SXO combines SEO with UX. Appearing in the results isn't enough. The user needs to stay, read, and convert.

Behavioral signals like bounce rate, time on page, and internal clicks influence ranking. A site that ranks well but converts poorly serves neither the search engine nor the user.

How They Work Together

These four approaches aren't alternatives. They're layers of the same system.

Base SEO. Structure for the answer (AEO). Content citable by generative engines (GEO, AIO). An experience that converts (SXO).

Remove one of the layers and the system is incomplete.

The starting point is always the same: a technically solid site with specific, authoritative content.
