Claude No Longer Covers OpenClaw: What's Changing
As of April 4, 2026, at 12:00 PT, Claude subscriptions no longer cover OpenClaw and third-party agentic tools.
It's not a bug. It's a deliberate choice by Anthropic.
What Exactly Changed
Before, you could connect OpenClaw to Claude using your subscription credentials — Pro, Max, or Team. The model would respond, tokens got consumed, all at no extra cost.
As of today, that's no longer how it works. Claude subscriptions only cover Anthropic's own products: Claude Code and Cowork. Everything else is excluded.

Anyone who wants to keep using OpenClaw with Claude has two options:
- Extra usage — a pay-as-you-go add-on on top of an existing subscription
- A direct API key — access to the model through the Anthropic API, billed separately
Who's Behind OpenClaw (and Why It Used to Be Called Moltbot)
OpenClaw isn't a company. It's an open-source project by Peter Steinberger, an Austrian developer.
The tool runs locally on the user's device and connects to Claude, GPT, or DeepSeek through existing chat interfaces: Signal, Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp. The user sends a message, and OpenClaw carries out the task.
Until January 2026, it was called Moltbot. Anthropic raised a trademark dispute — the name was too close to elements of its own branding — and Steinberger renamed the project.
The irony: the tool Anthropic pushed to rename is the same one it's now excluding from its subscriptions.

The Negotiation That Didn't Go Well
Steinberger didn't take it quietly. He negotiated directly with Anthropic, involving board member Dave Morin as well.
The result: a one-week extension. The block was originally set for March 28. It got pushed to April 4.
Nothing more than that. No exemption, no commercial agreement, no middle ground.
The Compensation Anthropic Offered
Anthropic put together a package to limit the damage to existing users:
- A one-time credit equal to one month's subscription. Must be redeemed by April 17, 2026.
- A discount of up to 30% on advance purchases of extra-usage bundles.
- A full refund for anyone who wants to leave entirely.
The implicit message: Anthropic would rather lose a few users than keep absorbing an unplanned infrastructure load.
Claude Code Channels: The Parallel Move
On the same day as the announcement, Anthropic unveiled Claude Code Channels — an integration of Claude Code with Telegram and Discord.
The media immediately dubbed it the "OpenClaw killer." The takeaway is obvious: Anthropic is closing the door on external tools while opening an internal window that offers similar functionality, under its direct control.
The timing is no coincidence.
Alternatives for OpenClaw Users
The community is already on the move. The main directions:
