Adobe Buys SEMrush
$1.9 billion. Adobe acquires SEMrush. This isn't a defensive move — it's a statement about where digital marketing is heading.
SEMrush has the data. Adobe has the creative surfaces and enterprise channels. Together, they're aiming at Generative Engine Optimization: optimizing not for Google, but for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
SEMrush: From SEO Tool to Media Company
SEMrush was founded in 2008 in St. Petersburg. In 2021, it went public on the NYSE. In 2024, it posted $376 million in revenue, with 33% growth in the enterprise segment.
In 2024 it acquired Third Door Media: Search Engine Land, MarTech.org, SMX. It's no longer just software. It's a publisher in the very industry it serves.
Why Adobe Needed This
Adobe runs Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Analytics, Adobe Brand Concierge — products for large enterprises that orchestrate customer experience at scale.
The problem: clients are asking for visibility across AI models, not just Google. SEMrush brings search data and the ability to track how a brand appears in AI-generated answers. That's the real reason behind the acquisition.
What GEO Is
SEO optimizes for Google. GEO optimizes for language models.
LLMs don't follow links. They read structure, weigh authority, interpret intent. A site optimized for Google isn't automatically visible on ChatGPT. These are two different problems.
What Changes for SEMrush Users
Current subscriptions won't change in the short term. Adobe can't afford to lose 118,000 paying customers on acquisition day.
For those already using Adobe Experience Cloud, an integration between SEMrush data and Adobe Analytics is coming. For those who don't use Adobe, nothing changes right away.
The fate of Search Engine Land and SMX remains open. Adobe could keep them, sell them, or let them keep operating independently.
What Changes for Ahrefs, Moz, Similarweb
Pressure. They'll need to build GEO capabilities faster or find partners. The acquisition raises the bar for what an SEO tool needs to do in 2026.
Timeline
The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2026, subject to antitrust approval. The EU is reviewing it. Adobe has already seen one major acquisition collapse before: Figma, 2023.
What to Do Now
If you work in SEO, start understanding how GEO works. It doesn't replace SEO — it adds to it. The sites that will be visible in 2027 are the ones starting to work on this now.
